I’m Kim Baust, M.Ed., “The Literature Lady” and founder of YSA Homeroom by The Young Scholar Academy, and this is my 30th year in education. I’ve spent my career helping kids fall in love with great books through Reader’s Theatre, lively discussion and novel studies. Join me and a team of like-minded teachers as we guide students into the amazing world of books.
Our kickoff month, November 2026, is a two-week class that will only cost $40. December 2026 will be three classes, for $60. Beginning in January, all Book Clubs will meet 4 times a month for a price of $80. These prices are for YSA Member families only. If you do not have a child currently enrolled in YSA, you are not eligible for this special pricing. However, all children in a family are eligible for Member pricing, not just the enrolled student.
No. Our "Once a Month" Book Clubs focus on promoting and developing a love of reading. Yes, we cover comprehension and will lead great activities and discussions about the stories. However, the focus and purpose is to introduce books to students and show them how much fun reading can be.
If you have two siblings who want to join the same Book Club, then you can pay for one sibling, then add the second sibling for a reduced cost. For the kick-off month it will be $10, December will be $15, and all other months the Sibling Add on will be $20 for a month.
Payment is due upon enrollment. Your payment pays for the next month's book club. For example, if you enroll on Oct. 16th- you are paying for the November Book Club. There is no refunds for November or December once the first class has taken place. However, starting in January 2027, you may cancel up to 2 days after the first class of the month for a full refund.
No. The grade level of the book club indicates the level of the books that are read.
Examples of the types of books we will read are:
Story Sprouts- Grades 1-3: Magic Treehouse, Desmond Cole, Dragon Masters (<200 pgs)
Book Buddies- Grades 3-5: Frindle, Vanderbeekers, The Penderwicks, The Eyes and the Impossible (250+ pages)
Bookworm Society- Grades 5-8: The Greenglass House, Savvy, The Last Mapmaker (320+ pages)
Please! Read it with your child or listen to the audiobook if that is best for your child!
All children are welcome! There are no rules!
All Book Club meetings are recorded. You will have access to the recording within 24 hours of the Book Club.
No- you are enrolling in a monthly auto-renewing book club. Your child will be enrolled until you pause or cancel your subscription. You may cancel your subscription anytime before it auto-renews. Email reminders will be sent to alert you to the upcoming renewal. We will also keep you informed of what books will be read in the upcoming months. That way you can pause for a month if your child is not interested in reading a particular book, or maybe you are just too busy!
No problem! You can read them as you teach them! All the answer keys are provided, so no worries! I often love to read a book along with the students. You get to give honest predictions and thoughts.
You may get your child a copy of the book anywhere you would like! My favorite place is the library! You can also buy it from a local bookstore or order it. I have a Bookshop.org link that will be including in your welcome email. This is an independent bookseller that donates money to independent bookstores around the US. I do make a small commission from all sales- but at no cost to you!
Of course! Our enrollment will be ongoing! Join anytime!
